Starter Set

Designed especially for little hands and first-time train fans, our Starter Set is a simple, colorful introduction to the world of wooden trains and to Whittle Shortline Railroad. With a steam engine, boxcar, tank car, gondola, and caboose, this set introduces young children to several classic train car styles while keeping things easy, fun, and approachable.

We chose the Chessie Cat boxcar to help catch the eye, because everybody loves a kitten, and the gondola adds extra play value by giving kids a car that can carry small treasures along for the ride. 

Unlike some of our larger and more advanced trains, the cars in this set use straight axle wheels instead of swivel truck sets, making them easier for young children to place on the track.

Handcrafted by real railfans, our wooden trains are designed as durable, child-friendly toys made for years of play and often treasured as keepsakes and heirlooms. While safety and durability always come first in our designs, each piece is still inspired by the look and spirit of the real train.

Important: Any other trains purchased in the same order as this preorder item will ship together when the preorder is ready. We cannot split one order into two separate shipments. If you would like another train sooner than the preorder item, please place a separate order.
